Welcome to the 'New' blog/forum of
Breakpoint Trades! We have added many new features to the
blog/forum (and we plan to add a lot more features and further
improvements in the future), and the blog also has a nice clean
look. However we think that it's time to roll it out, even
though we would ultimately like to add more features and
improvements . In fact, the whole website will soon get a
face-lift; i.e. all the pages of the website (Newsletters/
Watchlist, etc) will be given a face lift with similar graphics
that you see in this new blog. The blog/forum at Breakpoint
Trades is not exactly a blog or a message board, it is more of a
hybrid of the two. This is a not a purchased product, but was
coded from scratch.
New Features of the 'New'
Blog/Forum:
-
New Clean
Look: It was time to move on to a more professional
look and feel
-
Better Search
Capabilities: By Key word or words, and you can also
search your private mailbox, nice calender date search etc.
-
Polling
featurewhere we can create polls for the community to vote
on subjects
-
Threaded Posts:
The new blog now has threaded posts, which give you the ability to
stay in and respond to one thread instead of always making a new
topic. You can see the number of responses to a certain post
(via the number in the comments button) and click to expand the
thread to see all the responses to that particular post.
Also, by clicking on a post title, this will bring you into the
thread of that post topic.
-
My Favorite
Posts: This is a neat feature; for example, there are
a lot of great posts made on the blog each and every day and
sometimes you might see a great post (such as an educational piece,
chart, article, etc) and you want to save it. Well now you
can save any post that you want, just click on the 'Star' on the
right side of each post and it will turn to a gold color.
This will save the post for you and you can save as many as you
want, hence you can keep a list of your favorite posts. Your
favorite posts are stored in 'My Favorites', which is a link in the
left hand tool bar under 'Tools'.
Also, you can view other members favorites!
-
Members Online:
Now you can see who's online; this is listed in the left hand tool
bar and is organized by most recent posts.
- When you click on a
poster's User ID, it will display all the posts which that person
has made.
-
Audio Posts:
This is a feature that allows Steve and Matt to add and an audio
MP3 file to the blog, which plays automatically when opened; it
works just like the audio that is in the Newsletters and Intra Week
Updates. This will get used by us occasionally in order to
make quick points that are sometimes conveyed better through
audio.
-
Improved Personal private
inbox: The old blog had private messaging, however
we've improved the private inbox. The new inbox looks better
but now you can also search for past messages; when you are in your
private inbox, the search box displayed in the left hand corner
will search only your private inbox.
-
Future
Improvements: We plan to add a lot more features over
time, however we wanted to go ahead and launch the new blog now and
move on to the other pages of the website. We will come back
to it in the future and make new additions and improvements.
Your feedback will give us ideas for further improvements.
A
nd lastly, I'm
sure there will be a
few bugs and problems
with the new blog, there always is with any new
software. However, that's what you guys are for! If you
see any major bugs or problems, please send us an email through the
website by clicking on the '
Contact' button
located in the upper left hand corner. For the Subject,
please choose '
Technical
Support', that way your message will go directly to our
programmer James.
thanks and I hope that you find
this new blog a big improvement over the previous blog!

Get rid of the computer problems pronto. No one wants to
pay for a service that is unreliable. My businesses have
dozens of computers, none are down more than a few hours and I live
in lowly Fargo, N.D.
Matt, to me the new blog is a lot better than the old blog. I
just need some time to familiarize myself. Some members might
not like it. they are used to riding the bicycle and don't
want to drive an automobile, and that's normal. So do get
discourage... and continue the good work.
This blog is basically like the old blog, it just has a lot more
functionality. This blog also works like the old blog, just
click on (recent) to see the recent posts like the old
blog.
I spent a lot of time, money, and thought on the new blog and
I'm not done with it yet, so your comments don't make me feel too
good.
Remember the old blog, it was the same way, when I first
launched the old blog, many people hated it, but over time they
grew to love it just like you loved the old one; however in time
after we polish this one up more, you will come to like it too and
you would not want to go back

Don't take it too hard Matt. It will just take everyone
some time to get used to it. I'm still getting used
to navigating around but I think it looks fantastic and
very professional. I know I am not alone in appreciating all
the hard work you put into the site and all the improvements you
make on an ongoing basis!
I'm still getting used to the site -- and maybe this has already
been commented on -- but when I go to "Recent Posts" I wish that
there was a path from each comment that would take me back to the
thread that's being commented on so I can see the context. Or am I
missing something?

Hey all - if you check the posts all day - you'll see they
already have the plan to have that fixed tonight. Let's not
beat them up on this - look for posts by James_roe and you will see
what he posted today. It's gonna be fixed.
- feels bloated and sluggish - not everyone has a
super-high-speed connection...
- pages too short
- I am online now but my name doesn't show (no big deal but is
this even a useful feature? makes for long empty pages)
- when replying I should not be asked below to "designate" it
from the list of topics - the designation belongs to the original
entry! Also this whole Topics business is artificial and arbitrary
and not very useful in my opinion - I always use "All" anyway. What
topic does this discussion on the blog belong to?
-also the "select...designation" below should be a selection
list with a separate button for "Submit)
- first impression: no big deal - using "recent" and "all"
guarantees you don't miss anything - time-stamp on all expanded
entries is good (I asked for it so I am happy it's here!)
It feels the same way to me also. My computer had to be
rebooted twice this morning and that's never happened before.
Guess I'll have to figure out how to download a new "browser".

- feels bloated and sluggish - not everyone has a
super-high-speed connection...
Your first page load may be a little slower than it was on the
old blog but subsequent page loads should be faster. The new blog
is actually a smaller page load in terms of total page size, and in
my case most pages are being served in under a half of a
second.
What browser are you using? If you are using ie7 or ie6 it may
feel slow because it is using advanced JS features that MS did not
optimize for. Newer browsers such as ie8, safari, chrome, and
firefox 3.5 have GREATLY improved JS performance and I recommend
you upgrade if you are using an older browser.
- pages too short
There are actually typically more posts per page now than there
was on the default view of the old blog. However we will probably
be upping the default to 25 tonight, and adding back in a selector
later in the week to allow you to view quite a few more posts if
you so desire. We didn't enable this initially because we wanted to
make sure performance would be stable during the trading day.
- I am online now but my name doesn't show (no big deal but is
this even a useful feature? makes for long empty pages)
Members online would more aptly be called Members with existing
sessions that are less than 30 minutes old. It's not meant to be a
definitive list, but more of a way for you to gauge trends in terms
of how many people are online during what times of the day, as well
as a way to find out about new people. We will be tweaking the
members online feature. Ultimately we would like to use it as a
spring board for getting people to interact with each other. You
may notice that if you click on a members name anywhere on the site
you will now go to a page listing their posts and favorites. Maybe
this will convince some lurkers to make some comments now that
their posts are easy to find. At a minimum though we will be adding
more features to what will become a "profile page"
- when replying I should not be asked below to "designate"
it from the list of topics - the designation belongs to the
original entry! Also this whole Topics business is artificial and
arbitrary and not very useful in my opinion - I always use "All"
anyway. What topic does this discussion on the blog belong to?
This is an off topic conversation, and you are absolutely right
that when replying you shouldn't need to pick a topic. I will get
this straightened out. Will probably also add a channel link next
to each parent post's info letting you know what topic something is
in if you are on the view all view. The topics can be pretty
useful, particularly for non day traders who are not on the blog
all day.
-also the "select...designation" below should be a
selection list with a separate button for "Submit)
this is actually the same way it used to be done, but we are
considering using a check box rather than buttons or a select
field.
- first impression: no big deal - using "recent" and "all"
guarantees you don't miss anything - time-stamp on all expanded
entries is good (I asked for it so I am happy it's here!)
actually this blog is faster than the old blog, I can see the
time in ms and it's faster and the server load is less than the
previous one. Don't just assume that it's slower with only a couple
of posts.
If you click on "Recent" next to "View All", you get the
messages in order (like the old blog). Then you can read all
the replies/posts since the last time you checked.
Posted by James_Roe on 27th of Jul 2009 at 11:15 am
I will get a link added this evening that takes you to the
"parent" thread from recent view, your posts, and your
favorites.
This wasn't added initially because of the way the DB is setup,
we were worried about performance given that the new format
requires more DB access. However, everything appears to be running
pretty quickly today so we will add this feature in tonight.
OK private messaging works now (see the mail envelop
icon). Voting for the poll works now as well, however you can
ONLY vote once! That way you ultra Bulls and ultra Bears
can't vote endlessly and goose the results!
. Now we just have to get the 'Edit
Post' working, about 1/2 way done with that.
Then after that we have a few things to do on the private inbox
such as delete post inside message, sort and search the mail,
etc. That will all be done tonight.
Posted by pthoreson on 26th of Jul 2009 at 12:55 pm
Congratulations on getting the new site up and running. I know
it has been a long process and no doubt many hours have been spent.
From my brief tour so far I have to say it is a big
improvement.
I just did a side by side comparison with IE8 and Firefox. I did
not notice any difference in appearance between the two. But, when
I clicked on the first chart posted in the blog, Firefox took 16
seconds to open it whereas IE8 took only 2 seconds!
I switched from using Firefox to IE8 when it came out and have
not gone back to Firefox. I liked Firefox much better than IE6 or
IE7, but IE8 seems to me to be the quickest browser yet.
Please note, the programmer still has to add back the (send
Private Message) feature, he'll do that early on Sunday.
Therefore you'll be able to send private messages again sometime
tomorrow.
Also you'll like the way the new inbox works, much better than
the old one, but we still have a few more things to add there on
Sunday as well.
