It's
not entirely clearwhy
Roubini's comments in Istanbulare getting
so much playthis morning, but here goes: "I see the risk of a correction,
especially when the markets now realize that the recovery is not
rapid and V-shaped, but more like U- shaped."
The risk of a double-dip recession is rising,
Nouriel Roubini writesin a
FTop-ed today. He cites two reasons: 1) Policymakers face
a 'damned if you do damned if you don't' choice between mopping up
excess liquidity and risking stag-deflation or allowing
inflationary expectations to rise. 2) The risk of a contractionary
shock if speculation drives oil back over $100.
Comment!
Look for
another 150-200 U.S. bank
failuresin the current cycle, bank analyst Dick Bove says. He predicts
the FDIC will extract another $22B from banks in assessments over
the coming quarters, which amounts to about 25% of the industry's
pre-tax income.
U.S. regulators have begun targeting the big-time speculators
suspected of artificially inflating prices for oil, natural gas and
gold. Turns out some of the big guys happen to be small fry.
Exchange-traded funds, which have become popular as one of the
few avenues for small investors to gain direct exposure to
commodity futures, are a top target in the Commodity Futures
Trading Commission's drive to rein in speculation in oil markets.
The CFTC's moves reverse a trend in market innovation that allowed
almost anyone to bet on the direction of energy prices along with
the likes of
Goldman Sachs GroupInc.
