Chavez is a problem, for sure, and he would love nothing more
than to go to war with Columbia but he knows the US will back
Columbia. So, he is for now confined to his rhetoric. On the other
hand, the US and the CIA have backed too many coups in SA over the
years and has few friends left here. Basically, Peru. Even
Brasil has questioned the US use of Columbian military bases
and, to show how little the US is trusted these days, Brasil had
its foreign minister seek personal assurances from Obama that
those bases would be used only for drug interdiction. A sad state
of affairs.
And, now Chavez wants to spread his press restrictions
throughout the region. Funny that Brasil would object, they jail
members of the press who call their corrupt politicians corrupt.
One Brasilian Senator even admitted over the weekend, "we are all
corrupt". Nothing newsworthy, it is pretty much accepted and
tolerated.
