Interesting twitter thread regarding the enriched uranium trade (trade as in supplies for reactors)

    I really wish we would

I really wish we would move to Thorium reactors instead or at least start doing some real research into the viability of them. No need for the large cooling towers (almost zero chance for a melt down like you have with uranium), and the radioactive waste products from a Thorium based reactor are less than 500 years, really a couple hundred years (yes a long time but logistically manageable). whereas radioactive waste from Uranium based reactor is like 100,000 years!  My problem there is, I can't imagine the logistics of trying to manage the storage of that for 10 times longer than the pyramids are old. We can barely manage bridges and roads infrastructure let alone something that needs looked at for 100,000 years!

Thorium of course is not without it's drawbacks - but the main reason it never got off the ground was because the push was always for Uranium reactors from Military to supply nuclear grade weapons material - Thorium would not have supplied all the material for those 50,000 nuclear bombs made in the 1950s - 70s. So research was very limited on Thorium and there was no demand for it.  They should start looking into it more now finally since there's no nuclear arms race anymore.

of course fission is always being worked on but the joke there is that it's always 20 years away. 20 years ago it was 20 years way, 10 years ago it was 20 years away LOL

    Yes. but the simpler solution

Posted by brophy on 8th of Sep 2022 at 12:00 pm

Yes. but the simpler solution is to recycle nuclear waste instead of stupidly storing it in a mountain for 100 years. The French have been recycling it for years. I'm no expert but the Stage 4 nuclear reactors being developed today have an actual "shut-off" valve as, simple as that sounds, and are pretty much accident-proof. The trouble is we still live under the "Chin Syndrome" national fear. Thanks, Hollywood.

    Yep, left off a couple

Yep, left off a couple of zeros. Sadly. most of America gets its history from Hollywood. Remember Hunt for Red October where the Russian developed a stealth submarine...all when in real life their missiles couldn't even get out of their silos as the economy collapsed? Or how about Oliver Stones' ridiculous JFK. My girlfriend at the time turn to me and said." I didn't know that happened!" "That's because it didn't," I said.

    The "Chernobyl" TV Serie ...

The "Chernobyl" TV Serie ... a huge hit and top production  ... but littered with false information and reinforced the anti-nuclear narrative ...  Add the "Meltdown - Three mile island" serie on Netflix ... not denying there was problems there and gross negligence, but the goal of this serie was mostly to scare people off Nuke and not document what happened IMHO ...

    Many of the modern designs

Many of the modern designs for reactors are not manned by humans (in particular, the one backed by the Gates Foundation). There hasn't been an accident that couldn't have been prevented by proper execution of the emergency / safety plan. Humans are the weak link so it will be good to see them removed from the nuclear power equation.

    100 years - again the

100 years - again the waste is radioactive for 100,000 years. Thorium 250 - 500 years, so we are talking about 400 fold difference. Again there's hardly been any research done on Thorium based reactors because the focus was on getting enriched PU from reactors for bombs - now that's gone more or less

Hollywood - no one should listen to any political statements from them. enough said

    It happens over and over.

It happens over and over. That's how oil pushed out most other sources of energy when the Rockefellers  got control. That's how hemp was removed from the market. I don't mean the drugs but other uses.  "And the beat goes on."
