The SPY closed at 134.83, not below at or below 134.79 that
would have triggered a buy signal for the system! I should
have trusted that and not looked at the bad tick data on
Tradestation which can occur at the close.
You see in Tradestation, the prices can fluctuate at the close,
but then they update again about 1 min after the close to the
'actual' closing price! I found this out the hard way today.
what a cluster fuck, but at least I know this going forward
to only look a the closing price and not to trust the first min or
so after the close on Tradestation. WE know what the price
should be intra day, and it was obvious by looking at any other
chart or quote system that SPY closed at 134.83 and not below
134.80
We'll all remember today after we've made a lot of money on the
system over the years and we'll have a good laugh over day one! You
know what they say, "As soon as you go live with something, if it
can go wrong, it will!" No biggie, but it was exciting :-)
so everything said about after-hours is nonsense - we don't buy
or sell after-hours, they don't count, right? all the testing,
stats etc. relates to regular hours?
So my question still stands: how do we enter a trade if the
trigger has to do with closing price? the FAQ says that all trades
are entered at end-of-day?
Take it easy, Matt. It's ok...if the system does half of what it
did since 1995, we are all going to be happy in the long
run...everyone just needs to take a long term view of this and not
get excited in the short term....
Sorry if this was already answered somewhere here...but to
be absolutely clear - is this what you Matt want us to do - if the
trigger has to do with "closing price" you want us to try to buy
after hours? (this is not you, but what some people here think you
mean). Does your back-testing and experience use this data? not
trying to be nit-picking here, but if the stats etc. were all done
on regular trading hours, then I don't think it's right to just
extend it into after-hours, liquid or not - especially in
conjunction with the recent notes about silver about possible
manipulation etc. in the twilight zone with no volume! I am also
keeping in mind that the exits from the system are defined (for
Longs) as "next open" not after-hours, which means after-hours is
not really relevant.
May I suggest politely, that perhaps we need a little more
clarification on this subject.
I bot AH immediately following your first email, then sold it
immediately after your second one. Didn't make a lot, but enough to
offset my commission. It's all good. Looking forward to the next
"real" one...
I did the same and since I'm new to the after hours....learning
curve only cost $3...LOL! Matt, thanks for keeping us up to minute
and being so honest with what's going on.
I think once things get more routine...it will be much
easier!
F.Y.I. - it wasn't just Tradestation that had the bad data -
Stockcharts for a while was showing the wrong close too - even
showed on the one-minute charts. Fidelity had it right.
Well, that was fun and I think I lost a few pounds. Can't
wait for tomorrow's close!

Matt:
So, what did you do? Did you buy or not?
Bob
I'm sure everyone appreciates how seriously you take this...

Seriously, looking forward to an easier signal, but the trial run was instructive.
