We're likely automated so the trade executes without looking at a chart. That's kind of the purpose to the strategy systems - you don't need to be monitoring every candle.

    IB and SRS shares

No shares to short at TDAmeritrade. Had to buy URE. I'm going to switch to IB. Can you short SRS with IB? Any problems borrowing shares?

    Long URE vs. Short SRS

I'm being lazy right now for not backtesting this, but has anybody backtested the SRS 15 min system that uses the long URE position vs. the short SRS system.  I am currently running it that way on Tradestation and from my experience, it is virtually the same -- maybe 0.1%-0.3% off sometimes, but not all the time.  I suppose that adds up with time.

    No shares to short

I was at my office when I heard "order cancelled" on my SRS shares; TDAmeritrade had none to short; checking Interactive Brokers, they had 500,000. So, before switching my account from TDA to IB, has anyone had problems shorting SRS at IB?

Secondly, I also went long on URE; my backtest to Jan 1 shows a 2.77 profit factor, vs 4.48 on SRS. So using the same parameters, URE is not as profitable as SRS, but not bad either-still tradeable on a system.

There were a few weeks in April when the market was strong that IB did not have many of the bear ETFs to short (SKF, SRS, QID as I remember) --- guess some big guys had gobbled them up. Generally however it's not a problem

No problem with shorts at IB.

I mentioned in a prior post that I thinhk it would be a wise idea to go ahead and set up an IB account even if you are not doing mechanical system trades. When this market startes dumping, the likelihood of getting shorts anywhere is going to become an even bigger issue - like it was earlier in the year. JMO, but if you can, think about AT LEAST a small second account - costs is so minimal and would be paid for 1 year on a good short that you would otherwise miss.

    SRS URE

How do you backtest that? Just asking because I would think you could only manually visualize the trades since they do not trigger based on the URE chart.

I backtest and automate my entries into and out of URE based on the SRS EMA cross.  I use SD at Ameritrade and have it set to trigger off of what is going on SRS.

you can find way better paramteres for URE if you backtest.

no -- but I can tell you its worth backtesting and no good being lazy -- I recently found a URE system that performs dramatically better.

    SRS SKF

Posted by rgoodwin on 9th of Jul 2009 at 01:02 pm

TS did not have either SKF nor SRS this morning but I took the trades at IB no trouble. If you want to use the systems, you gotta get an IB account - use TS for the systems program and IB to make the trades. Also, as we beging the big wave C down, it is likely TS will be worse and worse on all kinds of stocks to borrow, So if you are set up at IB, you'll likely be able to short whatever you want when you want. Nothing more annoying than wanting to short something and you can't get it.

Since I opened my IB account I have not had a single problem getting my shorts filled. Get your set up - it's easy and will make you money by not missing out on trades.

    I do not know how

Posted by cspirit on 9th of Jul 2009 at 12:55 pm

I do not know how anyone is trading this ... Your right you should have these automated however I'm sure not everyone is currently.  I'm just call it out for those on BLOG who cannot watch every chart etc.

    have you nothing better to

Posted by Michael on 9th of Jul 2009 at 01:12 pm

have you nothing better to do?     the thing is -- if people want to be trading a system and don't have it automated and also can't be bothered to set alerts or even watch the charts..............they shouldn't be hopping into a trade because of your posts anyway.  What will they do if it reverses and you don't happen to post that?  What will they do tomorrow?  The systems only work if you trade them consistently.

Your posts are really annoying because they are useless -- worse than useless, they give people the idea they can profitably trade these systems haphazardly without even being serious enough about it to set alerts or watch the charts.      If someone asks for a confirmation of a trade signal -- great.  But just posting these useless posts again and again and again is -- and it would probably take a psychologist to explain why -- REALLY annoying.
