Hello everyone, I've finally finished the preliminary trade
statistics for the XLE/ERX swing system that I've been working on
for a quite while now. However note, I still have some trade
rules to double check, so it's possible that a few of the past
entries may change slightly when all said and done (but only
slightly), however here's what it looks like thus far from 2005 -
present.
This is a swing system that stays in the market most of the
time, it's not a reversion to the mean system like the RSI 2
S&P systems that I've posted, it's goal is to catch the
whole trends. I base the signals off the XLE chart vs ERX
because XLE has a lot more history, plus I don't trust taking
signals of ERX which is a 3X ETF. The primary component of
the system is the BPENER indicator, however I use
a plethora of indicators and rules -there are a ton of
rules and this isn't a system that I can program into Tradestation,
way too complicated, however I'm not divulging the rules
to the system, the BPENER used by itself does not work well, the
other indicators are needed.
The statistics are pretty ridiculous, about 530% since 2005 and
that's non compounded - no profit reinvestment. I suppose ERX
would be about 1500 - 1600% since it's 3X ETF or over 200 - 220% a
year, and XLE returning about 70% - 100% a year, note I have not
yet made up the table for the ERX trades, however obviously they
would be taken exactly on the same days since all signals are based
on XLE. Trades can last anywhere from a just a few days to
weeks and months with one trade lasting 8 months between 2010 -
2011 (see the trade table), but otherwise all trades are taken at
the close, save for a few that could be stopped out intra day.
The average number of trades is about 12 per year. Please
note that the statistics trade table is quite tall and will look
very small when you first click on it, however if you open it up in
another window you can expand it to full size by clicking on the
picture, it's a standard feature of any web browser).
My goal would be to send signals out to the website members and
place the statistics into the 'Mechanical Systems'
section, however I'm not set up for that yet. Currently the
system is still in an open short.
One thing really cool is that the same trade rules
and methodology should work on other ETF's, for example I
should be able to use the exact same rules to come up with an
S&P 500 swing system based on the BPSPX indicator, etc.
But again one step at a time, first I have to finalize
this.
However one of my major concerns is being able to always decide
if the system is going to do a trade before the market close - The
BPENER doesn't update until 1 hr after the market closes and how it
closes as well as the many other indicators is very important to my
rules. I have a calculation that I run in Stockcharts.com
intra day, but it sometimes doesn't match, hopefully I can figure
that out. The worst case scenario is that I would confirm the
signal 1 hr after the market close, which for me is fine because I
can simply enter or exit the trade after hrs - I know for some of
you that can be an issue, but for me it's not.
In conjunction with the new XLE swing system I would be
interested to using the 2x leveraged Proshares DIG and DUG. Not
going overboard with anything but nothing is stopping you from
going into cash at any point in time, thus creating your own
diversion 'within' the mechanical trading system and the timing
signals that it generates. Howard Weinstein NYC
I'm actually anxious to do the same thing with the S&P 500
or SPY into a swing system like ERX based on the same indicators
and methodology of course the BPSPX would be used in
place of the BPENER, however all the other indicators and settings
would be the same like MACD, Bollinger Bands, RSI 14 and 2,
Stochasic 5, 34, and 60,
or just short ERX, I prefer the short the Inverse ETF's since
they can degrade some thus you get an extra boost.
Some of the trades can last 3 months, with one trade that lasted
9 months and I don't like holding those leveraged ETF's for that
long because of degradation, a short time is fine, but I would
rather be short ERX for 9 months than holding ERY
And guys
PLEASE PLEASEI
can't stress enough, when I do release this system, do NOT
go crazy overboard on margin, especially on the 3X ETF's, for
example there is one 11% losing trade (which was in the last bear
market before Mar 2009 so it's understandable because of the huge
volatility at that time) however that would be a 33% losing trader
with ERX or ERY, how many of you could emotionally handle that if
put a large portion of your capital into the trade?
Again the vast majority of losing trades are very small
like only a few percentage points and there are not many of them,
but some can be 5% or 7% (a 7% losing trade for example would be
roughly -21% for ERX/ERY, that's large number for you guys to
emotionally handle). Also avoid buying options because when
in a trade we don't know how long the trade will last, and options
have a time decay.
The point is, don't put your whole account into a trade, don't
use margin, don't buy Options because of their time decay and since
we dont' know how long a trade will last (could last days to weeks
to months), use proper money management. If a trade goes bad
and you are on margin in ERX/ERY or have options, do NOT complain
to us about a bad trade, that's on end for using too much
leverage.
Personally I'll be trading XLE, as I don't need all that
margin
tomakeit- if the
system goes long again before I'm able to officially put it on the
website in a section, I'll let you guys know on the blog, but I
probably won't send a global email out to the website until
it's officially launched, so you will need to check the
blog from time to time and the newsletter
thanks it's been a ton of work mentally and physically,
otherwise anyone can see the ERX results early by simply looking at
the dates for the XLE trades in the table and looking up the ERX
prices for those dates (ERX trades would be the exact same dates),
all trades are at the close
Thanks for your diligence and passion for helping the members at
BPT. I have been a member for quite awhile and have always
been impressed by your integrity and sincere desire to help us
manage to survive the changes in the market.
All the best to you and your family for a wonderful
Thanksgiving. And best wishes to Steve and his family as
well. You are an incredible team and devote so much time and
energy to your work. Blessings to you both!
