    My Back

Posted by matt on 13th of Feb 2012 at 01:57 pm

regarding my back issue a couple weeks ago, here's a picture of one of my desks:

it's a powered sit to stand desk, in the picture I have it about chest high, the desk has a power button on the left so you can raise and lower it in a few seconds.  I have one of these in my other office as well

    so futuristic

Matt it's so interesting the different types of advice you got about your back - from meds to exercises to yoga, etc. To me, your office trading room looks so futuristic! It's a personal preference of course, but my back would hurt just at the thought of working there! You probably want it that way because it keeps you mentally alert and focussed?

I trade sitting on my bed my feet up, my back propped against some pillows against the wall, with my laptop on another small pillow on my lap. It's comfortable and cosy. I'll bet you could feel better just by adding some warm cosy colours, and some soft textures. :-) Maybe a photo of your daughter smiling to remind you why you're doing this in the first place? :-)

    thanks for the comments Susan,

thanks for the comments Susan, yeah this is my style.  Actually thinking back to that day, I think I had hurt my back when I was on my deck messing around with our grill, I took a wrong step and it jolted me a bit, so I got me the next day I guess.

I also like to change things up, for example I have three different trading offices in my house now in different rooms and I'll routinely alternate between them to change things up a bit.

Yes I'll post some pictures of my daughter Olivia again, once in a while I have her in my office and it's cute to see her playing there while I work.

Otherwise, b eing able to stand up at least for a while during the day makes a lot of sense, it's hard on the body to just sit in the chair all day, it's not natural, and there are potential health problems that can develop because of this later in life, such as blood clots in the legs, back problems, etc.

The desk that I originally bought was at a place called 'Relax The Back' here's a URL. It's a chain store, so you may have heard of it or been to one before, most large cities have one.  I bought the large size, and I have the dark java color instead of the light wood, it cost me close to $2000 at the time, that was a couple years ago .

However the other place that found on the internet just the other day looks interesting and a lot cheaper, maybe 500 - 700 bucks cheaper, so you might want check out this place.

since you asked, here's some pictures of Olivia, the first two are her in the computer room, sometimes she's at my feet.  The first one she's looking at an Ipad and  you see her toys around, the second shows a closer view, the images are kind of dark though because of the lighting and this is from a phone.  the last one shows her in her high chair today at lunchtime eating, you can't see it, but she has something in her hand that she's chewing on

    Glad to hear you're doing

Posted by PA on 14th of Feb 2012 at 11:23 am

Glad to hear you're doing better. My own back issues were solved by a combination of regular ab excercises and hip flexor stretching, as already suggested.

BTW do you happen to have details on the desk, monitors and pc's posted somewhere? Great looking setup!

    the trading lifestyle sitting in

Posted by matt on 13th of Feb 2012 at 01:59 pm

the trading lifestyle sitting in a chair all day is not healthy, so being able to stand up during the day for a couple hrs helps, as well as some cardio, stretches, and exercise.

being able to stand up is nice because when I'm a chair I find myself slouching over all the time, when you stand up, you are forced to stand up straight.

( I think I put his daughter through college), I can offer some second hand professional advice. You may not need it however....

One of the largest strains on the back is the abdomen. Without seeing a pic of yours ( that's okay save it) the typical person has the gut hanging and pulling on the lower back.  Six minutes a day of properab exercises will help immensely.

Form is most important. Doing them wrong can cause more harm. In short, never let the back arch while doing whatever exercises you chose,. Forget a Roman chair if you are not a body builder.

Posted by pebs on 13th of Feb 2012 at 02:14 pm

Matt have you ever thought of adding a treadmill? One of the docs that I work with has this in her office and she can do 2-3 miles of walking every day.

Sounds minor, but not only that, you find you breath easier and think more clearly....I think.
