Thanks Matt. for the good encouragement. I've been afraid to take longs for weeks because of fundamentals. (How dumb is that?!)  And of course been getting killed on my shorts. :-(

SPY system is still short,

SPY system is still short, right? Of course I went to the Systems tab but it still says it's a work in progress, so I"m not sure it's being updated.

But Matt, isn't all your historical data based on the exact opening or closing prices? We can't just throw out all those stats. If we just go with "experience" then why even  bother with the systems?

I've NEVER found it confusing.

SPY system update

I've NEVER found it confusing. The only thing confusing is how anyone can find it confusing! Matt you have the patience of Job as you explain over and over again when it's sometimes obvious that some people just don't read.

Wow! this might be a genuine forward-looking indicator! But then again, there are so many places that institutions might buy puts. But then again, this chart is impressive!

Ohh! That explains why there's so little credit when I try to roll out my short calls.

The idea is that religious Jews do not want to hold positions over the these holidays because they're busy doing holiday things. So yes, it's sell on Rosh Hshanah and buy back on Yom Kippur. However, for this to really work, you'd have to believe that the religious Jews control the market. And if you believe that, I have a nice bridge I'd like to sell to you. :-)

Thanks Matt

SPY System Update

Torvix it's not confusing to me.:  One long subsystem closed. And another long subsystem opened. Your stops are your own responsibility.  Steve always reminds us to trail our stops on all our positions.  Or if you're just following the SPY system, then just wait till the system closes.  We're always notified and it's quite clear.

THANK you Matt for that comprehensive explanation.

How about the SPY system?

AAPL system update

How about the SPY system? Matt do you think it will take a 2nd entry soon? Maybe at the Feb lows?

Friend of mine runs a small publishing corporation. Few yrs ago she tried to open a trading account at TDWaterhouse in the name of her company. You wouldn't BELIEVE the extra paperwork. I don't think the brokerage firm would allow you to not be responsible for your trading losses no matter whether you're a sole proprietor or a corporation. Taxation  pros and cons are a different issue and you could look that up -- I'm in Canada so can't say.

Been thinking about stops. SPY

Posted by sschulman on 1st of Apr 2018 at 12:08 pm

Been thinking about stops. SPY system itself cannot have stops but we should have our own sort of "emergency stop" in place. What if there's a power outage? What if you can't reach your broker? What if you're called away for an emergency? So we close our position when the system says to close, BUT we nevertheless have our personally determined far-out emergency stop in place.

LOL It looks like the market doesn't know WHAT to make of Powell's speech. I sure don't.

Yes! :-))  And I remember reading a long time ago that end of day reversals aren't necessarily real reversals - in today's case could simply be bears taking profits with more downside tomorrow.

Here's 10 min chart of today's VIX I don't see a spike.

So many ways to lose

Posted by sschulman on 6th of Feb 2018 at 11:43 am

So many ways to lose money when volatility soars! I went short some April 2000 ES puts.  Sold them for a couple of dollars. They were uncovered but I thought hey, if ES drops a few hundred points they'll still be out of the money and I'll have plenty of cushion. Those puts went to up $70!!! I found myself in a margin call!! Difficult night.  Hard lesson learned.
