A had a question below about a chart pattern, so I did a search
and found this book for free on the internet as a PDF file. I
actually own the hardcover edition to the book, I bought it back in
2003. Since that time there is a new version and
I recommend buying that one, however here's the whole
first edition for free and I recommend that you read it first!
Remember I'm a former Scientist/Chemist, so I'm a
Statistics/numbers guys, that's what attracted me to this book
originally. Everything is laid out like an statistics
encyclopedia for the chart patterns and that appeals to my
scientific nature. It will show you the proper way to identify a
chart patter (for example many people improperly label triangle
patterns etc. It will show you how to measure price targets
etc, but the nice thing is that it gives you statistics such as
what's the reliability of the pattern, what % of a time does a
stock pattern hit its price target, what's the failure rate, most
likely % move, what's the % that breakout and then re-test the
breakpoint etc. For example here's a
Descending Triangle page and an
Ascending Triangle education page I made way back in 2003
Here's the URL, you can either left click on to open it directly
in your browser, or right click on it to save the PDF file to your
desktop. If you left click on it, it will pull up in your
browser,
however I warn you, it may take a few minutes to
open in your browser as it's a very large file. Therefore I
suggest that you place your mouse over it and instead of left
clicking, right click on the URL and choose 'Save Link as' to
download the file and save it to your desktop
Makes you wonder why an AI program hasn't been created to look
for patterns and to display the statistics. If baseball can be
played "by the numbers" based on years of data, where are the
tools for us to invest that way. I suspect they are in use and
if we all used them, they would stop working as well.
There are many programs which find chart patterns. He even gives
one away free. Patternz from his website. You can find many
websites which offer this too.
It worked fine on my XP system, you might try running it in
'compatibility mode'. Right click on the icon, choose properties,
then Compatibility Tab. You may need to experiment, but try the
most basic first. You'll need your own data to run it (Yahoo CSV
files or export them from TC2007, my favorite.). It's a Visual
basic program, not complex wrt programming so should work without
too much effort.

Patternz is a 16-bit prog and does not run well with vista or W7. Do you know of any other good systems that are free?
