In-n-Out is quite popular here in SoCal. From what I remember
they have a build only what you can pay for business view, meaning
they'll only use the cash in the corp coffers to build
another restaurant, no loans for them. So, I wouldn't hold out
for an IPO there. Also uses Fresh meat, no
Freezers and cut their own fries on premises. They
have quite a following.

I did exactly that a few months ago. Long cross country
nonstop with no food in coach - I was starved by arrival.
Into the rentacar and found It close by. It was delicious. I want
the east coast franchise rights!
I've heard that there's just one Snyder left, a rather
young woman, who inherited the whole thing. Tremendous business
model perfectly executed so far.
But like Trader Joe's, another great San Gabriel Valley
institution, In-N-Out is making its way East (though much more
slowly than TJ's did).
TJ's Coulombe family, which still has some very interesting
characters around LA, did eventually sell itself to Aldi, the
Walmart of Germany, but the business has kept its focus pretty
well.
I was stuck in 405 traffic just before MacArthur heading North
when the In and Out corp plane carrying most of the family execs
crashed just before the airport and freeway.
They say the pilot dumped in into the only empty lot available
near the Santa Ana Auto mall. They were doomed but he probably
saved a few dozen lives on the ground.
One milkshake has more calories than 2 double doubles.

In-N-Out is the best. Fly in to LAX and go 1/4 mile up Sepulveda. It will be worth it.
