Quick unprovable impressions from a week in Mexico City: 1. No
homelessness 2. No crime or even a hint of threat 3. Prices 1/3 of
the US 4. Chill people 5. Perfect weather 6. Expats there are
over-the-moon happy 7. Food is healthy and fresh 8. The whole city
smells great!
My son lives in Mexico City and works as journalist. Parts of
the city are like Beverly Hills and large parts are like a European
city. Of course there are parts you don't want to go like any other
metropolitan city. I visited last fall and loved it.

I was in Cancun last week also. I guess I got lucky with the
airport thing - traffic on the way in because a pedestrian got
whacked crossing, but none on the way back. Cancun was fine...it's
beautiful and well kept...but I won't go back. They have policies
in place that confine people (mostly unknowingly) into the "hotel
zone." Within this zone taxis have a different license to
operate and if you wander outside of the zone into the main city,
it is very difficult to get back. I found out because we went all
the way into to town to rent bikes for the insanely beautiful bike
paths they have there (no tourists riding bikes though). We rode 6
or so miles back from the main city to our resort and kept the
bikes for the rest of the week. It was awesome...until we had to
return the bikes. Same ride back, but then found out about the
issue with only certain taxis that were allowed to go back into the
"hotel zone." It took us over an hour to find a taxi that was
allowed to take us back (and then it cost $15 to go 6 miles...which
is actually better than in the hotel zone where it costs $12 to go
1/2 of a mile). Not my style to be confined to a resort. I
won't be back.

Very cool. Not sure I could take the noise though., both and night. There are plenty of laid back quiet beach towns that are beautiful in Mexico.
