there is a decay factor in the 2x and 3x ETFs that can make the
returns asynchronous: SRS was down 5.2% today, while URE was up
3.9% and IYR was up 2.1%.
The decay factor only applies if you hold them overnight.
However, intraday, there are also discrepencies depending between
2X, 3X and underlying index.
One more thing. URE closed at 3.43 and a penny move there is a
much bigger percentage of the trade than in SRS. Any slippage and
commission will be magnified. Also any move is slower to come.
If instead of SRS short you took URE long today on the 15 minute,
you would have made 1.7% vs. 2.5% (assuming no slippage or
commission). Difference would have been larger with slippage and
commission.
I see. Thanks. I suspect that there are some like me
that have to buy URE anyway. I trade inside a SEP IRA and
cannot short. So when SRS or FAZ trigger short I buy URE or
FAS. Thank God for short ETF's. I would not have made
much money last year without them.
Why not open an account at IB. If a short triggers and no shares
at TS - then do the trade at IB - have it "prepared" to go as the
MA's get close. Once the trade occurs - you can place stops
if you use stops. You also could get Trade Bullet to execute
automatically. I don;t yet use trade bullet but have had no
trouble getting short when TS signals the trade. I simply at that
moment set my price in IB and let it go. RARELY if the price moves
away from the "entry, it will not pick you up so long as you
don't have a bunch of time in between the trigger and when you
place your IB trade. If you do this - you still have the TS
automation. Also, chances are reasonable that if you do not put the
$25K at IB to give you day trader status, you probably won't have
so many SRS trades that you will get caught in the 3 day (or 4 day
- whatever it is) rule. This was the 1st short trade on the 15 min
system since June 25.
What's wrong with buying URE

I would suggest that you use URE, or even IYR, rather than FAS, as they are the securities that most closely mimic shorting SRS.

I would have to get a programmer to alter my TS code to do that. That is the main problem.

Thanks. I can do this, but it takes away the automated advantage, and I do have a day job.
