I wonder how margin debt as a percent of total market cap compares to prior years?  Perhaps that would be a more apples to apples than nominal margin debt compared to prior years nominal margin debt?

    I would expect it to be linear, i.e. margin debt percent is increasing at the same rate as market cap but as you've implied (I think) the ratio (not sure where we'd get the data) could likely be getting ahead of itself as a new indicator / market tell.

    Yeah - if margin debt doubles, but so does market cap, I think you're in the same place even though it seems like an "extreme" if you look at debt only.
