just focus on trade setups vs trading the market, unless you are day trading ES like me.  Trade setups have been the bread and butter

Hi Matt, could you please explain what you mean by saying that day-trading ES Futures makes sense, but "trading the market" (by which I assume you mean SPY or other ETFs) is not a good idea? I think that the main difference is margin/gearing, not so? I trade CFDs, so that would put me in a very similar situation to being a futures trader, right?

    SPX cash and SPY cash

SPX cash and SPY cash market closes at 4 pm EST.  The ES daily candle closes at 5 pm EST an hr later.  There are quite a few times when a trade signal is showing on the ES daily bar by the close of the SPY and SPX cash, but the conditions are lost over the next hr as ES continues to trade for an hr after the SPY and SPX cash market close.  My point is if I'm seeing a signal on the daily ES system, I have to send it out at least by the close of the SPY and SPX cash market ( an hr before the trade is officially confirmed by the closing bar of ES for that day), but there will be times that the trade signal goes away and does not happen by the time the daily ES bar finally closes at 5 pm.  I cannot send out option trades obviously 1 hr after the cash market closes.  If I tell everyone that a trade is occurring on ES and then it goes away how do I then manage the trade? It opens a can of worms basically.  Again trading ES is no problem, and one could probably Trade the ETF's taking them after hrs only but clearly no option trades, and a lot of folks would complain about taking trades 1 hr after the cash market closes in after hrs anyway
