Sorry clarification - I'm yet to find an ETF that I can trade on US exchanges that tracks the SPY and qualifies under the new rules.

Hi Peter, yes I find the new restrictions make trading more complicated. For-example replicating the BPT SPY system trades - yes it can be done via spread betting but that can be hard to control because of the leverage available and the need for ultra disciplined approach. Personally I don't like SB and of I'm not sure what sort of protection is in place should the gods ever allow the markets to tank.

Another possible solution is to trade the UCITS listed ETF's such as IUSA (iShares S & P 500) and VUSA (Vanguard S & P 500). Others exists such as EQQQ, QQQS, CNX1, RTOW, SPX5. I'm yet to find one that tracks the SPY. Best of luck.

Best take on what will happen from Ambrose Evans-Prichard who has been way ahead on his reporting for sometime. See  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/comment/ambroseevans_pritchard/8740389/German-endgame-for-EMU-draws-ever-nearer.html

Impossible to call. A no vote has such immense consequences & so I would not expect a clear cut verdict.

Gold CEF & sentiment

See

Interestingly, the decline in precious metals has led to a very swift reassessment of their prospects by speculators and investment advisers alike. The closed end gold & silver bullion fund CEF is once again trading at a discount to its net asset value and there have been outflows from the Rydex precious metals fund that have brought its cumulative cash flow ratio to one of the lowest levels of recent years. In addition, Mark Hulbert's HGNSI (Hulbert gold newsletter sentiment index) – a measure of the average gold exposure recommended by gold timing newsletters, has plunged from a very high 73.7% to just 7% in a matter of days . It has in fact moved from one of the highest to one of the lowest readings of recent years in what appears to be record time. As Mr. Hulbert has put it:

“This sixty-seven percentage-point reduction in a week’s time is impressive, and most definitely enough to get the attention of contrarian analysts.”

Anyone else watching the way in which MGH falling. Also lackluster response of many big gold stocks to the move up in GLD last 4 days. See ABX & AEM prime examples.

TLT Govt bonds

Watching Treasuries. Thanks Matt & Steve for the long picks. But I'm concerned by how Govt bonds don't seem to agree with daily bullish market action. Stepping back for now.

Hi,

Pure copper you can go with SCOP (London stock exchange but purchase in USD), personally I hate the thin trade on that one so go with the broader industrial metals ETF called DBB, which I short.

Of course another alternative is to go short on the miners PCU (Southern Copper Corp) being the stock that comes to mind.

Hope that help

With respect, I see the inverse TLT near breakout. Counterintuitive I know with the massive debt, but Japan managed a bigger debt, multiple stimuli and bond rates continued to fall and remain at untra low levels.Deflation play.
