Tradestation and stockcharts.com

Posted by curranjohn46 on 14th of Jan 2011 at 02:37 pm

Hi all

I have been using BPT's stockcharts.com 60 minute chart for gdx and gdxj for the last year with good success.  I love using the 60 period stochastics to catch the meat of the trend. For instance buying on a break above 20 (presuming the Full stochastic is not overbought).

For the sake of experimenting with my new tradestation environment, I thought it would be worthwhile to backtest this approach.  However, what I find is that if I apply this approach in tradestation to GDXJ for example, the 60 period slow stochastic had not exceeded 80 since early December.  Yet in stockcharts.com, the 60 period slow stochastics shows GDXJ above 80 in late December/early January.

Does anyone undertsand how such a discrepancy could exist between two platforms?  I don't see how I could configure the 60 period slow stoch any differently.

I am just going to experiment with Tradestation.  Been using Schwab for some time.  No solid trading tools.

Just curious what folks think of the available platforms out there. I know there are plenty of tradeoffs. I am hoping to figure out a solid combination of broker, trading platform and backtesting software. I haven't done any backtesting of strategies before and I really want to try designing strategies, backtesting them and then paper-trading them for a while and see how it goes. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks baker.  I'll have to

Thanks baker.  I'll have to look into that easylanguage of theirs.

Intraday scans are not possible on stockcharts.com.  Does anyone know other platforms that could so this?

Not true.  I can do

Not true.  I can do the scan on a daily timeframe but not 60 minutes. Might not be possible on this timeframe.

Never mind.  I found an

I have had great success this year trading gdx and gdxj with the BPT 60 minute chart relying on the 60 period slow stochastics coupled with trendlines and other indicators.  But the 60 period stochs really seem to catch the meat of the gold trade.   A crossover on the slow stochs above 20 has been a high probability buy signal all year.

I am trying to figure out how to apply it to other vehicles and backtest it.  Does anyone happen to know how to create a stockcharts scan where a 60 period stochastics crosses above 20?  It is not as simple as I hoped.  I am sure I will figure it out eventually, but if by some chance someone here know how, I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks.

GDXJ is down 7% pre-market to adjust for distributions.  I trade it based on 60 minute chart (which will now be trashed).  GDX has minor distribtions. which may not be effecting price much.

I may trade gdxj using gdx as proxy.  Not ideal but what else can I do?  Anyone else in the same boat?

Manipulation (if you want to use that word) increases volatility.  Does it not?  And if you manage your risk accordingly and capitalize on the prevailing trend then volatility is a wonderful thing.

Gold stocks are highly volatile, which is why I love them.

Embrace "manipulation."  What's to hate?

Anyone using the mechanical systems code?

Posted by curranjohn46 on 30th of Nov 2010 at 06:01 pm

I am opening up a second brokerage account.  The new one will be with Tradestation.  I was looking at the mechanical systems here.  Some are turned off.  Some seem to have a flattening equity curve.  Just wondering how folks (inlcuding BPT) think the mechanical systems (running via code) are doing.

It is just FAZ, SDS, AIG and BIDU.  Correct?

I prefer adding every time the 60 minute chart triggers long.  And if it fails I sell what I added.  I added today and if the 60 period stochs say sell, I will sell for a small loss.

I won't short a bull market.  If GDX and gold gets below it 150 or 200 day MA I will start reconsidering if the bull market is over.

I have owned this for

SRS 15 minute system

Posted by curranjohn46 on 10th of Nov 2010 at 11:50 am

I was looking at the SRS 15 minute mechanical swing system.   If I am reading this right I should look for crossovers between a fast EMA 26 and a slow wma 39.  I don't see a wma on Schwab (my broker) or stockcharts.com.  I do see a "Frontweighted Moving average on freestockcharts.com."  Is that the same as a wma?

And I am not clear on how to specify the MA as fast or slow.  Do I misunderstand something? Or are these only Tradestation options that are not available elsewhere?  I don't see fast or slow options for MA's on Schwab, stockcharts.com or freestockcharts.com.

Thanks.

UNG has been grinding down

UNG - good entry point?

Posted by curranjohn46 on 1st of Nov 2010 at 02:36 pm

UNG has been grinding down for 28 months.  It is amazing.  I think you could short it at zero and make money. Smile

Good luck.  It is long over due for a good rally.  I just  need to see a trend reversal and try to catch the meat of a rally.

Thanks for the recommendations on psychology books.  Any recos for developing trading plans, mechanized or not, are also appreciated.

Looking for some good books

Posted by curranjohn46 on 22nd of Oct 2010 at 02:17 pm

Anyone know of any good books on the following:

1). Trading psychology --I want to better identify my personality traits so I can trade accordingly.  Or become more aware of any flaws that may hamper my success.

2). Designing and backtesting mechanical systems.  I have learned a lot here at BPT about staying with the trend, and being mechanical to eliminate emotion.  But I think I can learn even more if I go through the complex process of creating mechanical systems.   I am not even clear how to backtest somebody else's system.  I just want to read what I can on backtesting without spending money on some expensive software that I am not sure I can even trust.

FYI.  Reading this PDF from the original Turtle Traders prompted my post:  http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/files/turtlerules.pdf

Love to know what people think of it as well.
