Matt, the markets got slammed in July 2011 because of a warning of a debt downgrade. But the bottom was in the day the downgrade was announced, around August 2nd

Something I monitor is the sentiment for different products on StockTwits. Right now the sentiment is over 60 percent BEARISH for the SPY,the most I've seen in awhile. I use it as a reverse indicator. In fact. I have published a StockTwits sentiment table every month for a year.
