What am I missing? If the BPGDM remains unchanged the 8
SMA will overlap it. Does this qualify as a cross now?
I thought the BPGDM would need to rise in order to cross the 8
SMA.
Something not discussed yet is time decay. Time decay
means the value of your options are going to decay faster the
closer you are to expiration. This is important to understand when
holding options for longer periods.
I use options in place of buying stock for swing trades.
Here's my recipe.
Buy LEAPs. These options have an expiration of 1-2 years
away. This gives them alot of time value that won't degrade
much over the course of a swing trade.
Buy roughly 2 strike prices in-the-money. You're looking
to get a Delta as close to 0.70 as you can find. This means
for every $1 the stock moves your option will move $0.70.
Again this is adding to the intrinsic value of the option.
Matt, I have $BPGDM data back to Feb 2008. You mentioned
you only have the 2009 forward data. Let me know if you'd
like it. Also, anyone else who wants it, just let me
know.
FWIW my backtesting shows the best results with a Long entry
using the 6SMA and a short entry using the 3SMA.
Many thanks Matt, and BPT. I just exited my first GDX Mech. Sys.
trade with a 45% gain. I used in-the-money LEAP Calls instead
of trading the stock. My exit point was a 15% gain in the
stock from entry.

Long only on Multicharts

Here's the complete code for a Long only strategy:
inputs: Price( Close ), Length( 8 ), ConfirmBars( 1 );
variables: var0( 0 ), var1( 0 ), x(0);
x = initialcapital+netprofit;
setprofittarget (x * 0.15);
setstoploss (x * 0.06);
value1 = Average( Price, Length )of data2;
condition1 = Price of data2 crosses above value1;
condition2 = Price of data2 crosses below value1;
if condition1 then
var0 = var0 + 1
else
var0 = 0 ;
if condition2 then
var1 = var1 + 1
else
var1 = 0 ;
condition1 = CurrentBar > ConfirmBars and var0 = ConfirmBars ;
condition2 = CurrentBar > ConfirmBars and var1 = ConfirmBars ;
if condition1 then
Buy ( "MACrossLE" ) x/close contracts this bar;
if condition2 then
Sell("Complete Exit") x/close contracts this bar;
