    employment situation

This month's numbers may be misleading because of the seasonal adjustments. In a normal year there is an uptick in actual new claims because the auto manufacturers and their suppliers lay off staff to re-equip for the new model year or to have a vacation shutdown. This uptick is somewhat massaged away by the seasonal adjustments they use. This year may well be different in scale because of the reductions in employment earlier this year following the auto bankruptcies.

i guess masking the true figures by those dropping off the radar when their claims expire will also be a factor - it's a question of whether the market wishes to heed or ignore this.

    Yes, and what the press

Yes, and what the press and average Joe don't think about is those who's unemployment has run out and the fact that you are talking about an ever shriking job force. If a company started out with 100 employees but now only has 20, who can they lay off?
