paying 0.01% in interest on deposits. Once large banks start paying
higher interest rates on deposits, their growth will accelerate. A
few banks will soon control 90%+ of US deposits.

The situation you are describing occurred in Canada many years ago. 5 banks control almost all banking operations there.
