The official name for the current virus is SARS-COV-2. Google this and you'll get the same info as coronavirus (which is a wrong way to call it. It's like calling Chinese Asian. Not wrong, but not correct really).

    You could say it's a mutation of SARS-COV, which occured in 2004 that started in HK (actually in Guagzhou, China). So this coronavirus is not new. Actually it's new. Originally they called it Novel Coronarivus. The "Novel" part refers to the coronavirus similar to SARS, but a new strand. So it's not a total surprise. In fact, some scientists expected this. Only a surprise to layman.
