This is about the annual index charts that Matt showed us on
Sunday last, in particular that of the $SPX. If you look closely,
each of the last three bear markets has been identified by a
candle with an upper shadow that is longer than its lower shadow.
It would not have helped in 1987 because the market fell and
recovered within the year, but in in both 2000 and 2007 which had
the long upper shadows the greater part of the fall occurred in the
years that followed. If the $SPX does not recover in the next
couple of months, 2018 will be a year with a long upper shadow.
