As the 15th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks approaches on
Sunday, I am reflecting on the fact that I was in a business
meeting on the 93rd floor of #1 WTC at 9:30 am on
September 4th, 2001- just a
week before the Towers fell.
35 people, many of whom I met that day, died
instantaneously a week later at 8:46 am. A warm and friendly group
of innocent people who were just at work trying to make a living,
when their lives were ended by a force of evil . The first plane
entered the building precisely where I had been on Sept
4th.
Prior to that Tuesday morning meeting I had been in NYC for
the weekend for the US Open with my daughter and son-in-law. On
9-1-01 we went to the top of Tower #2. Now, holding the ticket from
that beautiful Saturday afternoon at the "Top of The World" makes
the whole experience seem very surreal. Of course, I have no
knowledge as to why the terrorists picked the 11th instead of the
4th to carry out their plot.
Somewhat ironically, I met Rob O'Neill - the Navy Seal who
killed Osama Bin Laden - in person last December, shook his hand,
and thanked him for his part in finding some measure of justice for
those 3000+ innocent souls who were lost that day.
I have a friend who was scheduled for a meeting on an upper
floor on 9/11. The other party had double-booked and asked him to
reschedule. After 9/11 he and his family moved to LA, basically out
of survivor guilt.
