The success or failure of averaging depends IMHO on ones time frame, patience and understanding of the fundamentals affecting the investment.
My nat gas plays are swing or long term altough I've been spooked to sell a few times to my regret.
For day trades or scalp plays, averaging down is dangerous if the play is not going as expected.
