Just a little facetious, an immediate 1pct increase would crash everything and probably make a lot of people homeless. I have a friend who tracks the economy by rating the subprime auto market which is very bad. Arun is correct there is a lag effect.  My belief is the core problem is energy related,  the constraints on it, and thus being the limiting factor effecting price increases on everything.  The FED/govt crushing demand with rate increases trying to fix supply.  CPI and the like not relly coming down despite all the new gadget calculations they use.  Steve made an interesting point on how market valuation really hasn't come down much when one factors in today's interest rates.
