The main problem with american car comapnies
is exemplified by GM - they had the best electric car
technoloy in the world and because of good old american hubris they
fought the CARB because they weren't going to be told what to do by
governement "gal damnit". So what did they do. They sold the
lithium battery patent to TEXACO who sat on it for years (good 'ol
efficent capitalism at work! - they never consire against the
consumer!) before the inventor Stanford R. Ovshinsky could come up
with a new version and this time keep it himself (see his company
symbol:ENER).
GM literally destroyed their market advantage by crushing every
one of their EV1's and destroying their R&D and selling it to
companies who would sit on it and not bring it to market (on
purpose!)
GM like all the US manufacturers self destructed because of a
corpoate culture that has existed in this country since the
depression. It is a short sighted bonus driven profits above all
else view that creates junk.
Only wwII and the mass employment need of the war change that
corupt culture.
But our industrial base was eroding in the 1960's anyway before
any jobs were sent overseas. The steel industry was in shambles,
car manufacturers where under assult from imports, we switched from
being the worlds creditor to being the world's debtor and that's
why Nixon took us off the gold standard.
Only wwII and the mass employment need of the war change that
corupt culture.
American corporate culture needs to be revisited if our economy
is to be rebuilt.Most EV1 engineers went to Telsa Motors - Check it
out. They are building an amazing car.

fleet at yorktown! the same that essentially created this nation
when we were on the verge of defeat!
a sense of history, please! - america has become a fascist
cartoon of world domination! we don't have to become socialist to
find a new direction. we do have to find a new direction
however.
also here is a challenge for you - free enterprise and
capitalism are not the same. capitalism can and does often lead to
where we are: inefficient and stagnant aggregate monopolies who
control the governement to the exclusion of free enterprise! GM
used to be an example of american strength. now they are a perfect
example of how unchallenged paradigms in an unquestioned capitalist
enviornment lead to decay. the pirates of modern american
corporatism believe in is robbing the consumer and jumping ship
with their payoff. innovation is dead in america. greed is all
that's left.
anyway, fascism is socialism! so, in every sense we are as
socialist as france right now. americans love their myths!
we were founded as a non-party republic. jefferson wrote
much about the evils of party politics and how it would destroy the
nation. the two evils he envisioned were politcal parties and
standing armies.
let me ask you - why do you believe in free markets in economics
but not in politics?
would you be alright with just two national car
manufacturers, or just two national electronics firms?
multi-party systems work all over the world and have less
corrupt elections than ours - eg, OHIO 2004, Florida 2000!
not a fan of obama and mccain is just plain nuts, but france was
right about Iraq, and the wmds and oil contracts. if
Bush, Irag and the last 8 years of fascism is what
america came up with when left to their own devices I say lets
listen to some advice and adjust our compass!@ ...viva la
france!
