Goldman Sachs take on cryptos

Posted by lapri24 on 24th of May 2021 at 02:11 am

Goldman Sachs take on cryptos - very good article that explains cryptos using terms that I can understand (without much crypto jargon).

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/amazon-information-goldman-initiaties-crypto-sees-ethereum-overtaking-bitcoin

The term “cryptocurrencies”—which most people take to mean that crypto assets act as a digital medium of exchange, like fiat currency—is fundamentally misleading when it comes to assessing the value of these assets. Indeed, the blockchain that underlies bitcoin was not designed to replace a fiat currency—it is a trusted peer-to-peer payments network. As a cryptographic algorithm generates the proof that the payment was correctly executed, no third party is needed to verify the transaction. The blockchain and its native coin were therefore designed to replace the banking system and others like insurance that require a trusted intermediary today, not the Dollar. In that sense, the blockchain is differentiated from other “digital” transactional mechanisms such as PayPal, which is dependent upon the banking system to prevent fraud like double-spending.

So cryptos are not 'currencies', they are to replace the banking system...

Didn't know I can get Binance account in the US... doh. I'm hoping ETH holds above $2K. Right now it is sitting at my cost (I averaged down). Sitting on a loss on BTC.

After this massive drop, I kind of like cryptos more than before, despite losses. No banks, no central banks intervene to support the prices, unlike their stock market and bond market intervention. There is no circuit breaker. The prices could go to zero. Wild-west free market.

Which exchange do you use, may I ask?

BTC has to hold around $32K, otherwise there seems to be an air pocket with thin volume until about $19K. ETH is right about a big support slightly below $2K (I added some) but I'm reading about allegations of 'stablecoins' as ponzi. If stablecoins blow up, particularly stablecoin by Coinbase, we could get BTC and ETH so much cheaper, like 2015 cheap...

The Hong Kong government is stepping

Posted by lapri24 on 21st of May 2021 at 10:37 am

The Hong Kong government is stepping towards making licensing local crypto exchanges mandatory, which will only be allowed to offer services to professional investors.

Professional investor=account of more than HK$8 million (USD 1 million or so).

Just when I thought cryptos can now chop around in a range... But does this mean US Treasury is admitting that BTC is currency-equivalent, I wonder?

You will remain boys and girls if you have a crappy account at BlockFi. They were busy "securing" the assets and blocked users from trading, buy or sell, when cryptos swooned to day's lows and after.

BlockFi BS. I wanted to

Posted by lapri24 on 19th of May 2021 at 12:54 pm

BlockFi BS. I wanted to add ETH so I logged in, only to see "trade" buttons are all inactive. Message saying your assets are safeguarded. I don't want f--king safeguard now, I want to BUY!

Sold BTC last night during

Posted by lapri24 on 19th of May 2021 at 10:06 am

Sold BTC last night during last night's carnage at $40K at a small enough loss, should have sold ETH too. My crypto winner for now turns out to be PAXG, digital equivalent of gold.

BTC - looks like gigantic

Posted by lapri24 on 19th of May 2021 at 12:29 am

BTC - looks like gigantic sell program just got triggered. Stop loss at $40,000 I guess. BTC is below $40K, ETH below $3K. Jesus christ...

BTG trying to move above

BTG trying to move above the trend line.

Old 'dirty' industries names propping my portfolio today, offsetting crypto carnage somewhat. BTU (up 30% today), NUE, APA, XOM, RIG. And slow-moving, low-beta old companies... IBM, NOC

Congrats! I hope to be following your step!

I am still very good at looking at (just looking...) excellent setups that later shoot higher :( and also good at buying low and selling lower LOL. Getting emotions out is super difficult for me.

Elon Musk's suddenly-found environmental concerns

Posted by lapri24 on 13th of May 2021 at 06:36 pm

Elon Musk's suddenly-found environmental concerns over BTC probably has nothing to do with BTC. Instead, he may just be scheming to profit from the federal government yet again.
