the tariffs were based on the trade deficit the US has with each
country rather than matching the actual tariffs the other countries
had on the US - for me they should NOT have been based on trade
deficits, but on the actual tariffs the other countries have
against the US
here's an example with one country, Indonesia; The US has
a 17.9 Billion Dollar trade deficit with Indonesia and their
exports to the US are 28 Billion Dollars
so the formula used was 17.8 / 28 = 64% - which we are
told what Indonesia charges the US and so we are being nice by only
adding a reciprocal tariff of 1/2 or a 32% tariff.
HOWEVER in reality the actual tariff % that Indonesia has on US
goods is 8.1% on average! So we added a 32% tariff
I feel like such an idiot for supporting Trump. I always had
some apprehensions about him. But I felt we need a strong
leader to fight woke extremism. I hope he changes his position on
tarrifs issue and start becoming a rational leader.
