Sad to hear Matt, your parents are always special. Dementia/Parkinsons/Altzheimers are ugly. ugly illnesses and draw heavily on your emotions and energy levels. As the Maori people of New Zealand say:- Kia Kaha (stay strong) Matt.

    thanks a bunch guys! Dementia

Posted by matt on 22nd of Sep 2022 at 12:44 am

thanks a bunch guys! Dementia is early onset, but really what we think happened today was what has happened to him a couple times now over the last couple years. An ischemic mini stroke. The firs time he had that, he couldn't talk for about a day, the symptoms cleared up on their own.  He then had another minor episode of it. Each time it happens his blood pressure is really high.

So the first thing I did was take his blood pressure, it was 195 / 95, pretty high. gave him some aspirin and it started to come down, was 145 / 85 when I left. Decided not to take him to the hospital since it was coming down and will call his doctor in the morning.

when these things happen his mind is gone for a while. Today he insisted that he went to my brothers office to empty the trash - which he did not. When I was at this place and gave him the aspirin, 20 min later he suggested that he take some aspirin and when I told him Dad I already had you take some 20 min ago, he insisted that I did not. Usually once this ischemic clears up his mind clears up too.

Of course one day we worry that it won't or will go into full blown stroke etc

My dad had Parkinson's and dementia.   Towards the end it was almost impossible to communicate with him.  But prior to his getting that bad, I would take him and my son on outings .... to air shows, to the Colonial pro golf tournament, out to dinner......all in his wheelchair.   It's been just over two years now since he passed, and I'm so glad we all did this together.   Fantastic memories to fall back on.   So, just encouraging you to get him out doing whatever he likes......you'll certainly not regret it later.

Best Wishes and prayers to you Matt.

    been on here for well

been on here for well over a decade and rarely post, but this one got to me. Parkinson's and Dementia here with my dad, though recently the doctor said he was mistaken it was not Parkinson's, but definitely dementia. We worked together for almost 20 years, and I grew the business he started before taking it over He has had epilepsy since I was in college, which doesn't help. Just two weeks ago my mom and dad up and moved to Big Sky country, away from the Great State of Texas. I know I have maybe a half dozen times to see him in person before he might not recall it, and after being next to him for 20 years it has done something to me that is unexplainable. But I agree, memories and legacy is why we are here. Best to enjoy what you have had and what you can have.
