i had a friend of mine who was arrested for smuggling weapons to
the IRA from south boston in the 80's. he did ten years. i
don't doubt that there were/are provocateurs, as there are in any
legitimate resistance movement. i will give a look to the book.

Pearl Harbor (WWII); there was no invasion of the South (Korean
War); Vietnam grew like a cancer...no one knew about it, no one
suspected it, no one even worried about it (matter of fact no one
even heard of the place...nor could they even pronounce the name
properly)...it just happened!
