001 is probabely what you do when you want to call a number in the USA  ( in your case from OZ) - since the sms is leaving/ departing from the US to go to OZ,  it is like you call from the US  - so to make an overseas call from the US you need to dial 011 first and than the country code 

I m in Europe and if we want to call the US that's what we do  00 or + and than the US country code 1   

for those strangers just like me, if you want to put your mobile nr in the SMS system, you need to mention first 011 than your country code and than your phone number - that should work
